The History of Lorem Ipsum: Why We Use Placeholder Text
The world's most famous meaningless text has a remarkably meaningful backstory spanning two millennia.
If you have ever worked in design, publishing, or web development, you have encountered Lorem Ipsum. The scrambled Latin text has filled mockups, wireframes, and prototypes for decades. But where did it come from? Why Latin? And why has it persisted when there are seemingly better alternatives available? The answers stretch back over 2,000 years.
The Ancient Roman Source
Lorem Ipsum traces its origins to a work by Marcus Tullius Cicero, the Roman statesman, philosopher, and orator. Around 45 BC, Cicero wrote "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" — translated as "On the Ends of Good and Evil." This philosophical treatise explored competing theories of ethics in the Hellenistic period, examining what constitutes the highest good and the greatest evil.
The specific passage that became Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of the text. In its original form, the passage discusses the concept of pleasure and pain — how no one rejects pleasure itself because it is pleasure, but rather because great pain sometimes results from pursuing it. The philosophical content is substantive, even profound, but the words would eventually become famous for an entirely unrelated reason.
The key passage in its original Latin begins: "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." This translates roughly to: "Nor is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires pain itself because it is pain..." The phrase "dolorem ipsum" — meaning "pain itself" — is the direct source of the name "Lorem Ipsum" (with the first word truncated and slightly garbled over centuries of copying).
The 1500s: Enter the Printing Press
The transformation from philosophical text to typesetting placeholder happened sometime in the 1500s. An unknown typesetter, preparing a type specimen book to showcase different fonts, took a passage from Cicero's work and scrambled it to create text that looked like readable Latin but was effectively nonsensical. This scrambled version is what we now know as Lorem Ipsum.
The genius of the approach was practical. Typesetters needed text that would demonstrate how fonts looked in a block of copy. Using meaningful text in the local language was problematic because readers would focus on the content rather than the typography. Using completely random letters would not demonstrate natural word spacing and letter frequency. Scrambled Latin hit the sweet spot: it looked like real text, with natural variation in word length and letter distribution, but it was impossible to read for meaning.
Type specimen books from this era would display a font at various sizes, with Lorem Ipsum filling the sample paragraphs. The practice became standard in the printing industry and persisted for centuries, passed down through generations of typesetters, printers, and eventually graphic designers.
Rediscovery in the 20th Century
Lorem Ipsum might have remained an obscure footnote in typesetting history if not for Letraset. In the 1960s, this British company revolutionized graphic design by producing sheets of dry-transfer lettering and symbols. Among their products were sheets of Lorem Ipsum text in various fonts and sizes, which designers could rub directly onto their layouts.
Letraset's widespread adoption brought Lorem Ipsum to a global audience of designers. For the first time, non-printers were routinely using the placeholder text. It became embedded in the daily workflow of graphic design studios, advertising agencies, and publishing houses around the world.
The next major leap came with desktop publishing. When Aldus Corporation released PageMaker in 1985 — one of the first programs to bring professional page layout to personal computers — it included Lorem Ipsum as its default placeholder text. Apple's LaserWriter printer and Adobe's PostScript technology made high-quality typesetting accessible to anyone with a Macintosh, and Lorem Ipsum came along for the ride.
The Web Era
The rise of the internet in the 1990s cemented Lorem Ipsum's position as the universal placeholder. Web designers needed dummy text to fill templates and mockups, and Lorem Ipsum was the obvious choice — it was already the industry standard, everyone recognized it, and it was unencumbered by copyright (being derived from a 2,000-year-old text).
Online Lorem Ipsum generators began appearing in the early 2000s, making it trivially easy to generate any amount of placeholder text. Tools like our own Lorem Ipsum generator let you create exactly the amount of text you need — whether that is three words for a button label or ten paragraphs for a blog layout.
Content management systems, UI frameworks, and design tools began shipping with Lorem Ipsum built in. WordPress, Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and countless other tools either include Lorem Ipsum generators or use it in their templates. The text has become so ubiquitous that "lorem ipsum" is understood as a concept, not just a string of words — it means "placeholder text" in the same way that "Kleenex" means "tissue."
Why Not Just Use Real Text?
This is the question that designers and developers ask most frequently, and the answer has remained consistent since the 1500s: real text is distracting. When you present a mockup with meaningful English text, stakeholders read the words. They comment on the copy. They suggest edits. They miss the design entirely.
Lorem Ipsum short-circuits this behavior. Because it is obviously not real content, viewers are forced to evaluate the layout, typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy. It directs attention to form rather than content, which is exactly what you want during the design phase.
There is a counter-argument that designing with real content produces better results because it forces designers to account for actual content length and structure. This is a valid point for later stages of the design process, but for initial wireframes and layout explorations, placeholder text remains the more efficient choice.
Alternatives to Lorem Ipsum
While Lorem Ipsum is the most recognized placeholder, several alternatives have emerged over the years. "Hipster Ipsum" generates text filled with artisanal buzzwords. "Bacon Ipsum" uses meat-related terminology. "Cupcake Ipsum" fills your mockups with dessert vocabulary. These humorous alternatives serve the same functional purpose while adding levity to the design process.
For more practical alternatives, some designers prefer using text from public-domain literature — passages from Shakespeare, Jane Austen, or other classic authors. This gives a natural English rhythm while still being clearly placeholder content. Others use randomly generated text that mimics the statistical properties of their target language, producing placeholder text that more accurately represents the final content's character distribution.
Despite these alternatives, Lorem Ipsum endures because it is universally recognized. When a client sees Lorem Ipsum in a mockup, they immediately understand that the text is a placeholder. No explanation needed. That instant recognition, built over five centuries of use, is an advantage no newcomer can easily replicate.
Generating Lorem Ipsum Today
Modern Lorem Ipsum generators go far beyond simple copy-paste. You can generate text by paragraph, sentence, or word count. You can start with the traditional "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opening or randomize the beginning. Some generators produce structured HTML with headings and lists for more realistic web prototypes.
Whether you are mocking up a landing page, prototyping a mobile app, testing a print layout, or seeding a database with realistic-looking text data, Lorem Ipsum remains the fastest way to fill space with content that looks real without being real. It has served that purpose for over 500 years, and it shows no sign of retirement.
